Artist Mr Ties de Blij
Amsterdam, Netherlands | 1973, NetherlandsAbout me
Living in the Now, while the world’s in crisis, seemingly identifying with a pinball machine gone wild.. In it mankind, increasingly confronted with a whole series of scary developments on a global scale. Economical, humanitarian, democratic, social, cultural, and environmental crises all unfolding at the same time.. Like lots of drops falling in a bucket with water, all creating ripple effects interferring with those of other drops.. Letting some doppler-esk amplitudo’s rise to disastrous heights, threathening the system on which man depends for survival and growth.
Through all this, paint flows spontaneously, the artist here and there playing the power of chance by movement, adding colour and depth along its way towards expression of some kind of imagined manifestation, or just intuitively into the void. Almost half the time, the artist’s initial intentions shine through in the final painting.. Particularly when the subject concerns individual or societal, psychological or spiritual issues typical for western modern day life. Alternatively, the creative process dictates on a need to see basis.
As an artist, Ties values freedom as a fundamental condition for happiness. In this context he appreciates being an autodidact, with authenticity of expression as his ultimate measure for defining what art is. "How else can one reconcile the importance of pure creativity with that of (the bittersweet) recognition from others over time?!"
He wonders whether it makes any sense to state that the central theme in his work is formed by “Human beings and their connection to barriers and enhancers of happiness around them”, when often open-mindedness causes him to be intensely fascinated by the beauty (in the ugly) of a random situation, over time resulting in a large variety of creative side steps?! Does it really matter when:
Art is seen as a basic necessity; a way to keep a fresh view, to reflect on, to play with, to love?
Or as Ties’ puts it, “In all this mess, feeling grateful feels good, and somehow causes more to feel grateful for.”
